Social media platforms are designed to grab and keep our attention, but this constant stream of notifications and updates can lead to decreased focus, causing us to take a longer time to complete simple tasks and decreasing our overall productivity.
When I reflect on the times I misused social media, it is usually because I don’t have a purpose for going on social media, but rather, I just stumbled upon it and then lose track of time.
Define your purpose for using social media. Are you seeking to connect with friends, stay informed, or promote your work? Be mindful of your intentions and avoid mindlessly scrolling for extended periods.
Just as one would set boundaries in real-life interactions, it's essential to have them online. This could mean no social media after a certain hour, allocating specific days where you go offline, or even just turning off notifications during work or family time. Such boundaries help in reclaiming time and ensure a healthier relationship with digital platforms
Setting specific times during the day for social media can drastically improve concentration on primary tasks. Whether it's a 10-minute break every two hours or designated times in the morning and evening, having a routine can prevent the endless scroll and distraction.
Applications like Freedom and Cold Turkey are lifesavers for those finding it hard to resist the pull of social platforms. They block access to chosen websites during set periods, ensuring that your focus remains on your work and not on the latest tweet or post.
